The Abwasser Story

It began as an idea of helping fish farmers provide clean water for fish……It became a mission of clean water for the planet.

Abwasser begins with our inventor, a marine biologist, corporate executive and entrepreneur whose love of the ecology and environment led him to the business of aquaculture and the challenges of producing healthy, sustainable fish stock.

As in our human world, aquaculture faces similar challenges in providing clean water for fish. The enclosed systems associated with fish farming combined with the high volumes of fish presented an incredible challenge from ammonia build up to outbreaks of dangerous pathogens. Many of the current biological and physical filtering systems were not working effectively. The use of chemical treatments were limited, marginally effective and degraded the quality of fish as a food supply. In addition, bacteria and dangerous pathogens were becoming resistant to chemical and biological treatments.

Along the way it became clear….

As in aquaculture, the challenges of providing clean water to the planet are the same.

Realizing the limits of chemistry, biology and filtering systems in the current array of water treatment solutions, we began to look at  water sterilization at the quantum level, by focusing on breaking the carbon bonds of organic compounds through pulsed energy.

Working with a collection of researchers and scientist equally passionate about this proposition, we began to pursue an approach unique to water sterilization: Precise Energy Separation™ (PES™) – the use of pulsed energy to break the carbon bonds in organic compounds without a chemical reaction. By focusing on breaking carbon bonds, sterilization and destruction of all pathogens could be achieved because carbon is the common bond of all organic lifeforms. With the advances in pulse forming networks, the development of super-capacitors and the ability to release compressed electric charges within a millionth or billionth of a second, the technology of Precise Energy Separation™ became possible.

The delivery of compressed electric pulses via a xenon based flash lamp in a reaction chamber, similar to current UV water treatment systems, allowed our team to pursue an approach to water sterilization that produces no toxic byproducts but delivered 99.99999% kill rates on microorganisms. This was a great departure from existing methods of water sterilization and treatment because PES™ bypassed the typical forms of sterilization that rely on chemical or photochemical reactions.

The story of PES™ Technology began with aquaculture, but now has expanded into the full spectrum of water treatment and sterilization applications that are at the heart of Abwasser’s mission to provide clean water for the planet. Abwasser Technologies is dedicated to pursuing a commercial endeavor to bring this technology into the fold of environmental preservation and stewardship by offering a new approach to clean water technology.

Our Technology

Precise Energy Separation™, or (PES™) is a unique, new technology that focuses compressed energy through a standard xenon based flash lamp to specifically target and break the carbon bonds that are the basis of all organic compounds. Using pulsed doses of high-energy light, at very specific wavelengths and frequency, our technology precisely cleaves the specific chemical bond(s) of all organic matter without creating toxic byproducts or needing any chemical treatment. Housed in a in-line reaction chamber, water is treated as it flows through the chamber. This system, with a vastly smaller footprint over current UV technology, is easily integrated into existing treatment systems.

Unlike current water treatment methods, PES™ sterilization does not proceed along the typical chemical, photochemical or oxidation processes, rather PES™ Technology focuses energy specifically and sufficiently to break the carbon bonds that bind together organic compounds. As a result there is high level of energy efficiency to the process as well as no unwanted or associated reactions that often lead to the creation of toxic byproducts. Unlike chlorine or oxidation processes, PES™ specifically targets the carbon bonds of a microorganism, completely destroying the organism structure removing any possibility of pathogens becoming reactivated or genetically mutated in downstream water ways.

Water Sterilization

Our superior method of sterilization focuses on complete destruction of microorganisms by breaking down the cellular structure. While other forms of sterilization disable and deactivate microorganisms, PES™ completely destroys all organic pathogens. This sterilization occurs at the a molecular level, precisely cleaving the carbon bonds between atoms that make up the organisms cellular structure, no chemical or photochemical reaction takes place.

Abwasser’s PES™ destroys all biologic life forms and their ability to reproduce — all viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi, protozoan cysts including giardia and cryptosporidium parvum. Many of these micro-organisms are becoming increasingly resistant to chemical and chlorine treatments which disable the organisms DNA and reproduction abilities, but does not completely destroy the organism’s structure, thus leaving the potential for regeneration and mutation. PES™ sterilization technology, leaves no opportunity for microorganisms to reactivate and regenerate after treatment.

Current solutions for sterilization and disinfection fall into two major categories: chlorination/chemical treatment and ultraviolet radiation. Chlorination/chemical sterilization has problems with dosing requirements, residual toxin issues, chemical storage and the creation of chemical resistant superbugs. Continuous wave UV sterilization operates with a low energy output that damages the organism’s DNA but does not destroy it. In both types of treatment, sterilization proceeds from chemical reactions that are imprecise and often unpredictable in the byproducts that they create.

Sterilization using our PES™ technologies can remove any contaminant specifically and precisely from any water source. It is a unique and original sterilization process that can be both tuned to interact with identified contaminants and scaled to meet the size and flow rate of the application.

Industrial Sterilization Solutions

Biologic growth, scaling and corrosion are critical issues to protecting industrial cooling systems. Biological build up of bacterial slime, algae, yeasts and fungi lead to degradations of cooling efficiencies, lower flow rates and corrosion of equipment. Bacterial buildup on heat exchangers have a major impact on the heat transfer of coolings systems. The associated biological fouling of piping, pumps and equipment create ideal environments for scale formation. In addition several types of bacterial growth generate hydrogen sulfide causing corrosion and sever pitting.

PES™ – Pulsed power water treatment provides industrial water quality solutions to these problems without the use of corrosive chemicals. Maintenance, cleaning and de-scaling of industrial heating and cooling systems requires costly downtime. PES™ pulsed-power systems have the ability to maintain low levels of microbiological activity without using corrosive chemicals eliminating environmental and health issues associated with life-cycle management of chemicals used to treat water.

Macrofouling is another major threat to industrial cooling systems. “Once-through” cooling systems that rely on inflow water from lakes, rivers and ocean waters face the continual threat of aquatic species such as clams and mussels causing damage to pumps, impeding flow rates and causing corrosion where they attach. PES™ Sterilization with high flow rates of 770 gpm per unit and 99.99999% kill rates can help industrial cooling systems form an impenetrable barrier to aquatic life, reducing or eliminating the need for biocides and chemical control and dramatically reducing maintenance downtimes.

Wastewater Treatment

Our PES™ sterilization technology has the potential to bring significant value to wastewater treatment providers. Easily integrated into existing treatments systems, PES™ can provide significant costs savings over existing UV sterilization methods with greater than 90% less energy consumption yet still delivers 99.99999% kill rates of microorganisms.

PES™ sterilization eliminates the need for chemical and oxidative additives to current water treatments methods, further reducing cost, while also reducing maintenance costs associated with chemical corrosion, scaling and equipment downtimes.

High flow rates at greater than 770 gallons per minute for a single unit, significantly reduce treatment time as well costs associated with water retention, including infrastructure costs of holding ponds and water storage. Specifically, PES™ technology has a remarkable value in the areas of stormwater treatment. Our scalable systems, with high efficiency in turbid waters can help re-engineer how we build storm water treatment and retention systems by eliminating or reducing construction of retention ponds and transfer to treatment arteries.

PES™ is scalable for any size application or location and can treat any organic or non-organic contaminant in any effluent. As an example, our PES™ System is capable of processing 28,000 gallons per minute (40 Million+ Gallons Per Day) in an area less than 10’x10’x6’. This is all accomplished with about the same energy as running a 1,000-watt light bulb!

Food & Beverage Industry

Abwasser’s PES™sterilization technology has the potential to dramatically change how the food and beverage industry approaches sterilization and pasteurization. The precise energy separation process provides greater than 99.99999% sterilization rates, killing all pathogens, including spores at high flow rates. The uniqueness of PES™technology, proceeding without heat, makes it a perfect fit for the food and beverage industry.

Focusing sterilization on the quantum level by breaking carbon bonds in microbial cellular structures, our PES™ technology provides the benefits of both sterilization and pasteurization by killing all microbes yet preserving the quality and nutritional value of the foods by eliminating the high temperature processes. The equipment costs, energy cost, and maintenance costs that are associated with high temperature/short time (HT/ST) or ultra-high temperature (UHT) pasteurization can be significantly reduced by utilizing PES’s™ small foot print, low cost, in-line sterilization technology. A small, 4” diameter reaction chamber tube is all that is required to provide a 99.99999% sterilization at a flow rate of 770 gallons per minute. A perfect fit for continual flow sterilization processes.

PES™technology has the potential to return real value to the food and beverage industry by eliminating the high energy costs of heating and cooling systems. Comparably PES’s™ very low energy consumption has the potential to greatly reduce the per unit costs of operation. In addition, eliminating HT/ST or UHT pasteurization equipment means significantly less maintenance and cleaning of heat-exchangers and manifolds required of systems that pasteurize through rapid heating and cooling. With PES™ sterilization technology, food and beverage processors can have the benefits of high sterilization levels that comes with high temperature sterilization process, yet all of the benefits of preserving food quality and nutritional value that come from lower temperature pasteurization.

Sterilization for Aquaculture

PES™ sterilization technology offers the potential to bring dramatic change to biosecurity management of aquaculture by giving aquatic farmers greater quality control of source water, effluent outflows and recirculation flows in land based pond and tank systems. Our sterilization technology provides an effective barrier with 99.99999% kill rates of any microbial pathogen or aquatic species from entering contained ponds. In addition, PES™ sterilization provides an excellent solution for prevention of pathogens and species from entering natural waterways via containment tank effluent.

Current fish farming technics use two forms of sterilization; chlorination/chemical treatment or UV and ozone exposure. Sterilization through the use of chlorination has distinct disadvantages in aquaculture with long treatment times, chemical management issues and the need for neutralization of chlorine after use. PES™ technology eliminates these processes without the need for chemical treatment. With flow rates of 770 gpm per unit, our sterilization technology can be integrated inline with minimal space requirements, minimal energy consumption and no cost of chemical disinfectants.

In addition, chlorine treatments are limited in their effectiveness. While smaller doses of chlorine are effective at deactivating certain protozoans, much higher does are necessary for killing the full spectrum of dangerous pathogens. PES™ sterilization produces 99.99999% kill rates of all microbes and eliminates any possibility of regeneration or mutation. Moreover, our sterilization technology with deep penetration of even turbid waters, is not dependent on pre-filtration of organic matter that diminishes the effectiveness of chemical treatments. Elimination of chlorine sterilization methods also eliminates the creation of toxic off gassing coming from the neutralization process.

Ultraviolet (UV) and ozone sterilization units are commonly used in controlling the microbial content of aquaculture water but also exhibit several technological limitations. Ultraviolet exposure is effective at deactivating many microbes however, they are limited in treating the full range of pathogens, damaging the DNA but not destroying the cellular structure. Using PES™ the carbon molecular bond that is critical for all forms of life is targeted and disassociated  – effectively exploding all living organisms on the molecular level. This is far more effective than targeting the organism’s DNA; which only eliminates the organism’s ability to reproduce. The use of ozone in combination with UV sterilization increases the effectiveness of the process however requires the removal of ozone before it can be used in tank or discharged into natural waterways. Our PES™ eliminates these issues and yet provides 100% kill rates.

With increasing global demand for fish and declining native fish populations, the demand for efficient, profitable fish farming systems is greater than ever. PES™ sterilization technology can play a critical role in advancing closed loop farming systems by helping maintain water quality and biosecurity without chemicals.

Abwasser Technologies Unveils Solution to Prevent Sickness from Drinking Water

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., May 21, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Abwasser Technologies, Inc., the innovation leader in high-energy pulsed Ultra-Violet (UV) light presents its unique and non-traditional approach to the sterilization of all water pathogens. University of Rhode Island (URI) PES™ Study Published in Chemosphere 

This study present assessed the effect of UV pulsed light (PL) on microbial and organic pollutants using two spiral lamps were used, i.e., PL1 and PL2 lamps, with wavelength cut-offs of 190 and 240 nm, respectively. Overall, our study demonstrated that pulsed UV light impacts several microbial biomolecules and degrades polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aqueous solution.
